LAKE COUNTY, Colorado – A 443 acre wildfire in the Twin Lakes area of Colorado was reportedly caused by an abandoned campfire just around 60 yards from the Interlaken Trail. The fire, dubbed the Interlaken Fire, has been burning near the Interlaken Historic Resort, though no buildings were damaged by the flames. It was

According to the Interlaken Fire Information Facebook page, the wildfire had grown to 413 acres with 0% containment by 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Later that day, the U.S. forest service upped it to 443 acres. Multiple agencies have responded to the fire while both ground and air resources continued to arrive.

Public and firefighter safety is the priority as the fire burns in difficult terrain in a popular recreation area. No structures at the Interlaken Historical Site have burned. Responders are present throughout the area, so expect heavy roadside traffic and drive carefully.

The campfire was located about 1.5 miles from the trailhead. It was likely abandoned for several days before the fire was first reported on Tuesday, June 11. There are currently no leads on who was responsible for the wildfire, though officials encourage anyone with information regarding campers with fires near the Interlaken resort between June 7 and June 11 to contact the Tip Line at 303-275-5266.

Remember, if your campfire is too hot to touch, do not leave it or go to sleep. Whitish or gray coals can retain heat for extended periods and can flare up if the wind picks up. Rock rings must be properly constructed, away from flammable materials such as pine needles and twigs, and without gaps between the rocks. Use water and stir the ashes until they are cool to touch. You are responsible for keeping fires under control.
