BOSTON BAR, British Columbia – A large landslide blocked off multiple forest service roads near Boston Bar, B.C., on Saturday, August 10. Bryan Fogelman, owner and operator of REO Rafting Resort, which operates along the Nahalatch River, captured the dramatic slide on camera, sharing it with CBC.
Fogelman said he saw around 1,000 trees and an immense amount of debris passing near his resort on Saturday. First responders and search and rescue responded to the scene, helping remove 40 people from the area. Fogelman believes the Canadian province didn’t act quickly enough and didn’t do enough following the slide, forcing locals to step in and fix multiple problems.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, landslides can occur quickly, following an earthquake or rainstorm, or they can gradually build up with the help of erosion, melting of permafrost, or the gradual weakening of materials along a hillside. Backcountry users in the area of this slide were advised to be aware of elevated hazard landscape following the Kookipi Creek wildfire.
