HIGH SIERRA, California – Despite it being August, a potential for snowfall is growing in some of the higher mountains of California. Though the snow will certainly be light, it has the potential to mark the first August snowfall in these locations for at least 20 years.

An unusually early cold storm, even for the High Sierra above 8000 feet. August snow has not occurred in these locations for at least 20 years. Although these are light amounts, motorists and hikers should be aware of this forecast.” – NWS

Based on the National Weather Service Hartford forecast, there are four locations with a chance of seeing over 0.1 inches of snowfall between Friday, August 23, and Monday, August 26. Tioga Pass has the highest chance, starting at a 20% chance at 5am Saturday morning and growing into a 45% chance by 11pm that night. The chance for snowfall concludes at 5pm on Sunday at a 5% chance.

Other locations include Tuolumne Meadows, Vogelsang, and Wolf. Wolf has the lowest chance, with just a 10% from 11am Saturday to 5am Sunday. Then, until 11am, the percentage sits at 5%. Tuolumne Meadows, meanwhile, has a 20% chance beginning at 11am on Saturday and continuing until 11pm the same day, and a 15% chance until 5am Sunday. Finally, Vogelsang has a 15% chance of more than 0.1 inches of snow beginning at 5am on Saturday, increasing to 30% at 11am and peaking at 40% by 11pm. The chance then decreases to 30% at 5am on Sunday, and fizzles out by 5pm.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask) the cold and snowy weather isn’t here to stay. Things are looking like they’ll be quite warm in the San Joaquin Valley next week. Between Monday, August 26 and Sunday, September 1, Bakersfield, Coalinga, Fresno, Hartford, Merced, and Visalia Muni have a solid chance of seeing temperatures above 100°F. Talk about a brutal weather whiplash!
